A monthly book club, connecting in person and virtually, for individuals who care about democracy

Learn. Build Community. Act Together.
Welcome to Democracy Book Club! Each month, our members read a hand-selected book that provides valuable context on how we arrived at this current volatile moment in the U.S. By understanding lessons, failures, and success stories from history, we can more effectively recognize threats to our democracy and better understand effective ways to respond.
It’s also easier to take action when we aren’t alone; that’s why one of the main goals of Democracy Book Club is creating community, while sharing tangible steps we can take to drive meaningful change.
Democracy Book Club is both a local and national initiative. Individuals can form their own groups that will meet in-person once a month, and people can also join for our virtual book club sessions. Additionally, all participants will be invited to join our Democracy Book Club app so they can both coordinate with their local group outside of meetings and collaborate on initiatives with people reading the same book in different pockets of the country.
How It Works
1
Join
Fill out a short form so we know about you and your preferences, including if you would rather meet IRL or participate virtually.
2
Read
All clubs read the same book each month, and we provide summaries and discussion questions to help guide the conversation. This month’s book is On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder.
3
Discuss
Meet with your book club to discuss the key historical and modern day lessons from the book, considering both the challenges we face and the ways they can be overcome.
4
Act together
Use the app to continue the conversation between book club meetings and collaborate on actions to take based on what you’ve learned.
What We’re Reading
Our October Book:

We’re starting with this short, powerful book by Timothy Snyder that helps us identify threats to our democracy and provides tips on how to respond. It highlights instances throughout history when people failed to act or appreciate the severity of the moment, helping us to avoid making similar mistakes now and in the future.
